THE RISE OF AFRICA’S CASHEW INDUSTRY – PART 1: Challenges and Opportunities
In recent years, Africa has emerged as a key player in the global cashew production and export industry and risen to become a dominant force in the global cashew market, with over 56% of the world’s raw cashew nuts being produced on the continent.
Countries like Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Tanzania are leading this growth, providing significant opportunities for economic development across Africa and. This rapid growth marks a significant shift in the global supply chain and offers substantial economic opportunities for many African nations.
Rapid Development of Africa’s Cashew Industry
With ideal climate conditions and vast agricultural land, Africa has become one of the world’s largest cashew-producing regions. Countries like Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ghana account for a large portion of global cashew output. Notably, Ivory Coast has surpassed other nations to become the largest cashew producer globally, supplying over 40% of the world’s raw cashew nuts.
The growth in Africa’s cashew production is largely driven by rising demand from international markets, especially from Vietnam and India, two of the largest cashew processors and exporters in the world. Raw cashew nuts from Africa are exported to these countries for processing and are then distributed to major markets such as the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite Africa’s impressive growth in cashew production, the continent still faces significant challenges, including underdeveloped processing infrastructure and a lack of investment in modern technology. A majority of raw cashews from Africa are exported for processing abroad, leading to lost value for local producers.
However, African countries are increasingly recognizing the importance of developing local processing industries. Initiatives to promote in-country processing, improve product quality, and increase value-added cashew products are gaining momentum. This would not only retain more value within local economies but also reduce reliance on foreign processing markets.
Challenges in Processing
Despite being the largest producer of raw cashews, only about 10% of Africa’s total production is processed on the continent. Most of the raw cashew nuts are exported to other countries for processing, causing African nations to lose out on potential profits that come from adding value to their products.
Opportunities for Growth
Recognizing the importance of processing cashews locally, several African nations have started investing in processing technologies. For instance, Ghana aims to increase its local processing rate to 50% within the next five years. Governments and international organizations are supporting these efforts through funding and technical assistance, helping to improve product quality and increase export potential.
