Organic cashew demand has grown steadily across European and North American retail, driven by clean-label positioning and premium snack development. But organic sourcing carries verification requirements that conventional sourcing does not — and the gap between a supplier who genuinely has organic capability and one who claims it is significant.

EU Organic And USDA NOP: What Each Requires
EU Organic
Regulation (EU) 2018/848
Required for organic claims in all EU markets. Covers raw material origin, processing, storage and handling. Certification by an EU-recognised control body. Import requires a Certificate of Inspection (COI) via TRACES
USDA NOP
National Organic Program
Required for organic claims in the US market. Certification by a USDA-accredited certifying agent. Separate from EU Organic — a supplier certified for one is not automatically certified for the other
The most common misunderstanding: EU Organic and USDA NOP are separate certifications. A supplier holding EU Organic cannot sell into the US as organic without NOP certification (or an equivalence arrangement). Always confirm the specific certification for your specific destination market.
What Organic Processing Actually Requires
Certified raw material source: RCN must come from certified organic farms with documented chain of custody. Land requires a conversion period (typically 3 years) before it can produce certified organic crop
Physical line segregation: Organic product must be processed with full separation from conventional product — either a dedicated line, or documented cleaning and changeover procedures with verification
Separate storage: Organic raw material and finished product stored separately from conventional, with clear identification to prevent commingling
Approved processing aids only: Any oils, salt, or seasonings used in roasted or flavoured organic products must themselves be organic-certified or on the approved list for the relevant standard
Full chain-of-custody records: Documentation from farm through to finished product, auditable by the certifying body at any point
Annual certification audit: Organic certification is renewed annually with an on-site inspection, separate from BRC or other food safety audits

Does the certification scope cover the specific product you are sourcing (raw kernel, roasted, flavoured)?
Is the certifying body recognised in your destination market?
How is organic production segregated from conventional — dedicated line or verified changeover?
Can the supplier demonstrate chain of custody from RCN origin to finished product?
Organic certification is one of the areas where a buyer's own due diligence matters most, because the claim ends up on retail packaging and the buyer carries the regulatory exposure. Verifying the certificate, scope, and certifying body takes an hour and prevents a category of problem that is very expensive to fix after the fact.
